17 Best Anime Series of 2022 (So Far)

2022 is shaping up to be a massive year for anime. Crunchyroll acquired the library from Funimation to become the online anime destination, and Netflix has announced that it will also start producing its own originals. While popular series like my hero academia, Chainsaw Manand Bleach are slated to premiere in the fall, new originals such as Ranking of kings and the return of demon slayer are exciting audiences with their bold and fresh animation styles.

Below, we’ve rounded up the best anime of 2022 (so far) and will update the list as more amazing new entries are released throughout the year.

The Girl on the Other Side: Siúil, a Rún

Nagabe’s gothic fantasy series comes to life in The girl on the other side, the story of a “beast” who cares for a lost little human girl until he can return her safely to where she came from. Originally released as a feature-length special, the beautifully hand-drawn film has been re-released into a three-episode arc for streaming.

Suspend your disbelief and channel Netflix’s recent Old enough reality show as you watch Kotaro go shopping and befriend his neighbors. Although young and impressionable, the boy begins to affect those around him in profound and life-changing ways.

A romantic comedy between a socially awkward boy who runs the family doll business Hina and a popular girl who secretly loves cosplay, My darling dressing is cute, charming and downright horny. If you’re looking for a guilty pleasure about a quirky teen romance, then this is definitely the show for you this year, but don’t tell everyone that.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Ocean of Stone

Back after a short break JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure ends the second half of season five with its long-awaited prison arc. Titled “Stone Ocean”, the story sees Jolyne Cujoh – the last in a line of heroes – accused and incarcerated for a crime she did not commit. Moreover, the dangerous Enrico Pucci is also inside the prison walls. Tracing Somethinghe steals the memories of his family members and friends, forcing Jolyne to stay in jail and solve the mystery.

Break all shouting and Shonen violence with Dance Dance Dancer, an inspiring story about a boy who falls in love with ballet. Although he is persuaded to adopt more traditionally male hobbies such as sports and martial arts, he is fascinated and drawn to the magic of dance. “Being cool is being true to yourself!” he rapturously declares in the series’ trailer.

In the quirky comedy series, a third-century military strategist is sent to present-day Shibuya in Japan after wishing on his deathbed to be sent to a more peaceful time in history. Immersed in an unknown and spooky time, he arrives on Halloween night and falls in love with nightlife, music and “freestyle rapping skills”.

In Ryusui, a spin-off special released this summer, he comes into contact with a skilled sailor and the revival of money. Will the reintroduction of greed and wealth destroy its chances of scientific progress?

Cyberpunk: Edge Runners

The video game that edge runners is based on, Cyberpunk 2077, may have debuted with so many bugs it was almost unplayable, but the Netflix animated series went off without a hitch. Yet millions of people bought Cyberpunk 2077 more a love of its sleek, futuristic aesthetic, blade runner-As pattern. Fortunately, edge runners was able to give fans everything they felt they had missed in gaming.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba

Following the success of Demon Slayer: Mugen Traina 2020 animated film that broke Japanese box office records even in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic, teen hero Tanjiro returned in early 2022 for the second season of epic battles and mayhem. The series, praised for its beautiful animation, currently sits in the “Entertainment District Arc,” which sees Tanjiro and his friends hunt down a dangerous demon disguised as a high-ranking courtesan.

Even though the English dub was just released last month, a third season for the hugely successful anime adaptation has already been green-lit.

Attack on Titan: The Final Season

The most anticipated anime event of the year, the latest episode of The attack of the TitansThe last season of just aired in Japan, completely shocking the audience. Although marred by controversial due to the show’s imperialist message and borderline fascist undertones, the series developed a massive American following.

Evolving through several major twists that disrupt the original concept, The attack of the Titans centers on a post-apocalyptic future in which cities build massive walls to keep out the “Titans”, giant, killer humanoids that roam the Earth.

For better or worse, the slow accumulation of fan theories and plot reveals was the kind of show that game of thrones viewers could look back with excitement and shock, proving the power strong characters have over their dedicated fans.

A short limited series of six episodes (rare for anime!), Orbital children follows five young heroes as they attempt to navigate a space station heading for disaster. Cute Kids and Their Brightly Colored World hit Netflix in January, wowing audiences with its crisp animation style.

Created by Mitsuo Iso, a veteran animator of classic anime like FLCL and ghost in the shell, Orbital children is his first new story in over 15 years. It was a long wait but, in the end, it was worth it.

Ranking of kings is the adorable story of Bojji, a little prince ready to take his father’s throne. Performing selfless acts and learning to come out of his shell, Bojji is all heart as he discovers what it means to not only be a good leader, but also a good person.

Complicating the story is his half-brother Daida, who believes power and conquest could be his path to the throne, putting him in direct opposition to young Bojji.

A heartwarming romance about two classmates who help each other break down conceptions of masculinity, Sasaki and Miyano based on the story of The boys like comic books, which feature gay romances.

Although Miyano is afraid to let people in, Sasaki helps break down his walls, and you can’t help but make these two grow together.

Tokyo’s 24th Ward is a new original anime from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure creative director Tsuda Naokatsu, who follows a Minority report-like plotting about people predicting crimes before they happen.

Living in Tokyo Bay’s titular 24th Ward, the three leads are classic anime handsome boys that fans are sure to love (something Naokatsu clearly picked up from his experience working on androgynous main characters in JoJo). It all works here with an exciting new story.

One of the most popular anime series of all time, the fantasy pirate epic One Piece is currently in its 20th (!) season. The show reached a milestone in November when it premiered its 1,000th episode, coinciding with the announcement from Netflix’s upcoming live-action series.

The story of a world covered in oceans where pirate crews sail the seas, A play may slow its release schedule as it catches up to the source material, but its success shows no signs of stopping. Thank god for that.
